MD5 Hash Generator

Type any text or pick a file and get its MD5 checksum instantly. The calculation runs entirely in your browser — no upload, no server.

The MD5 hash appears here…

MD5 is a checksum, not encryption — use it to verify data, not to protect passwords.

What is MD5?

MD5 turns any amount of data into a fixed 128-bit fingerprint, written as 32 hexadecimal characters. It is widely used to verify that a download arrived intact and to spot duplicate files.

How to use this tool

  1. Type or paste text, or pick a file.
  2. The MD5 digest updates as you type.
  3. Toggle uppercase if a system expects capital letters.
  4. Copy the hash or compare it with the value you were given.

FAQ

Is MD5 safe for passwords?

No. MD5 is fast and has known collisions, so it must never be used to store passwords. Use bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 for that. MD5 is fine as a file checksum.

Is my text or file uploaded?

No. The hash is computed by JavaScript in your browser, and files are read with the local File API. Nothing leaves your device.

Why does the same text always give the same hash?

MD5 is deterministic: identical input always produces an identical digest. Change one character and the whole hash changes.

Can I hash a large file?

Yes, but the whole file is read into memory first, so very large files may take a moment. A few hundred megabytes is usually fine on a desktop browser.
